One of the most common issues with 3D scanning is overlapped scan data; this is particularly common with entry-level equipment or hobby-grade machines. One of the reasons this occurs is because the unit does not retain reliable volumetric accuracy. As the technician nearly completes a full revolution and approaches the beginning point of the scan session, doubled data of the original starting surface may be captured. This indicates the amount of accuracy could be as much as millimeters, centimeters, or inches.
Unlike regular accuracy, volumetric accuracy increases exponentially. The amount of deviation can be very high over a short distance. This level of error has a direct impact on design, engineering, mold production, manufacturing, quality control, and ultimately, customer dissatisfaction.
