Most automotive exterior styling products fit onto existing OEM panels with complex curvature and surfaces. These subtle curves are extremely difficult to measure by hand.

Laser scanned data provides reliable and consistently accurate set of assets to design and engineer high quality products. Most non-professional 3D scanning options offer lower precision and tolerances, which may affect product fitment and quality control.

Most 3D laser scans of vehicles are usually of sports car platforms because the data works well with CFD simulation and motorsports engineering. However, there are many applications for laser scanning larger vehicles, such as CUV and SUVs as well.

For this project we were asked to perform a laser scan of the lower center console of the 2015 Subaru WRX and STI. The resolution of the scan was detailed enough to capture the textured surfaces of the OEM dashboard. Areas that were not needed were masked off in tape.
