Scanning Vintage Porsche Steering Wheel

Laser scanning a steering wheel may seem excessive at first because the geometry appears fairly simplistic. But on closer inspection, a steering wheel actually consists of precise dimensions and curves; each dimension was carefully thought out for ideal ergonomics. From the overall diameter, thickness of the grip, to the position of the controls, every detail was considered by the original designers to make the user experience as comfortable and approachable as possible. Laser scanners offer the highest level of precision of all metrology equipment. For this project, we were able to capture a highly accurate digital model of a vintage Porsche steering wheel. This data can be used for: archival, inspection, restoration, replication, modification, prototyping, and ergonomics design.
